DUO RUUT
It’s an evening where you can hear songs from Duo Ruut’s world-renowned, recently released album “Ilmateade,” completely live, right here and now. Plus, of course, some older favorites. Come soak in the smooth vibes and find out what everyone’s talking about!
Duo Ruut is the common ground between two good friends and musicians with different musical backgrounds and tastes. Inspired by their ancestors’ heritage, they decided to sit behind a single Estonian zither (kannel), which became a blank slate for the duo to develop new playing techniques and ideas. Although composing together on one instrument sets a fairly narrow frame, they have turned it into their trump card—their minimalist music is full of surprising and exciting solutions. It is a whole built on roots-based texts, contemporary composition, and a unique approach.
Last year saw the release of Duo Ruut’s LP “Ilmateade,” where almost all the songs on the recently released album are in one way or another about the weather—some quite deeply and metaphorically, others very directly. The album also reflects the developments and adventures of these young talents over recent years. “With this album, we take a piece of Estonia abroad, but we also bring small pieces of the world and our adventures back home,” Duo Ruut describes.
The high-flying Duo Ruut is considered unique in the world, and by no means only among world music lovers. Their activities have been covered with remarkable speed by international media such as Rolling Stone, Télérama, KEXP, BBC, Mojo, Le Monde, Radio RFI, Culturebox TV France, and others. Their latest album “Ilmateade” has received positive feedback both at home and abroad; among other accolades, it was noted as folk album of the month by the prestigious British publication The Guardian, France’s top radio station FIP made it their focus album for July, and the renowned magazine Songlines selected the album for its “Top of the World” selection. The record also made it into the 2025 annual summary of AllMusic—one of the world’s oldest and largest US-based online encyclopedias and music media portals—which lists the hundred most important LPs from around the world from the past year, alongside artists like Bad Bunny, Lady Gaga, Deftones, and many others. Last summer, Duo Ruut also presented their album at Europe’s largest festival, Glastonbury.
